about
Tapping directly into the source of life; psychedelic and soulful lo-fi-pop song 'Drink This Water' is the new single by multi-hyphenate artist James Alexander Bright. Both meditative and rejuvenating; this beach campfire paean to H2O features ethereal harmony vocals and softly strummed guitar washing over a stripped-down drum machine groove and delightfully loose bassline.
Written and recorded on a sunny spring afternoon at home, James explains "Water is everything: humans are moving vessels of water. My mind drifted off to an imaginary island in the sun with the thought of lapping tides and the heat on my skin. The chords to the song flowed out naturally, as if I'd already written it". The accompanying DIY made-at-home video sees James pressing play on one of his many tape recorders before painting a series of calming water scenes interspersed with cut out doodles and scenes of him jamming the track out in his spare room.
‘Drink This Water' is the first indicator of a second album, currently being written and recorded by James at home in the Hampshire countryside. Also a professional illustrator, this creative duality guides James' music to be as visual a voyage as a sonic one. Colours and shapes swirl, swoon, soar and sing amongst smooth grooves and dreamy melodies to form a kaleidoscopic multi-sensory world.
Released in April 2020, his debut album ‘Headroom’ was described in MOJO as “Blissful choruses, sweetly nagging refrains and a lo-fi sensibility. Hard not to love”. Uncut remarked on “Intoxicating, highly evocative, sun-dappled soul”, Electronic Sound Magazine flattered with "Pastoral 21st century electronic psychedelia that knows all the best clubs in town” and Louder Than War called it “Exceptional and exhilarating”. Feedback from musicians and DJs included praise from Groove Armada’s Tom Findlay (“All the musical styles I love. I’m a big fan”), Bill Brewster (“One exceptional album”), The Bees’ Aaron Fletcher (“A timeless record”) and Jack Wyllie from Portico Quartet (“Moves stylishly through psychedelic patterns and multicoloured textures”).
On radio his tracks have been played across BBC 6 Music (where he's recorded guest mixes for Tom Ravenscroft and Huey Morgan), Amazing Radio, Worldwide FM, Soho Radio, KCRW, Triple J and BBC Solent (who chose his track ‘Tigers Roar’ to soundtrack Portsmouth FC’s 2019 journey to Wembley; awkwardly James is a Saints fan).
During a busy 2020, James featured on three tracks, as well as designing the artwork, on Groove Armada's album 'Edge Of The Horizon', contributed exclusive track 'Under The Sun' to the Too Slow To Disco: The Sunset Manifesto compilation (alongside Kraak & Smaak, Yuksek, Poolside) and released collaborative single 'It's Alright' with Dutch producer/drummer Feiertag. His 'Headroom' radio show continues to broadcast on Noods Radio on Tuesday afternoon every four weeks.
lyrics
Only water can set you free
Drink and swim in harmony
Love you said to go
Oh what life, it’s beautiful
Only water can set you free
Drink and swim in harmony
Love you said to go
Oh what life, it’s beautiful
The chance of living is on its way
Lonely hands crossed at arms reach
So, so low
So, so low
Live just like a leaf on a tree
Hold it in your hand - oh misery
Life always
Enjoy today

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
